Following the success of “The Politics of Irish Writing” conference in September 2009, the Prague Centre for Irish Studies decided to host a graduate students conference on a bi-annual basis, in conjunction with the European Federation of Associations and Centres of Irish Studies (EFACIS), the principal Irish Studies network in Europe. The chief objective is to extend discussion space for graduate students working in Irish literature and studies and offer an innovative platform for the exchange of ideas.

The focus of the second conference, held in September this year, was on the uneasy boundaries between history and literature, transgressions of the literary and dramatic canon, interculturality and interdisciplinarity. It featured 18 speakers from 7 countries, who presented 10-minute summaries of extended papers that were followed by responses from nominated participants, and by a general discussion. A panel on migration, boundaries and the Gaeltacht was presented in the Irish language. Selected papers from the conference will be published in a refereed collection in early 2012.

The conference was supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland, and by EFACIS.

We look forward to the next graduate students conference, to take place in Prague in September 2013, in which we hope to expand its scope to include more papers in the area of history, politics, sociology and economy.
