About degree

The Department of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures offers a doctoral programme in Anglophone Literatures and Cultures. Applicants may choose one of two modes of study:

  • internal (four years with a stipend)
  • external (called "combined" in university materials and applications, five to eight years without a stipend).

The main aim of the programme is a substantial doctoral dissertation which must be recommended by the student’s supervisor and two examiners/reviewers and defended in public before an examination board. For the descriptions of the dissertation contents, standard and examination, and of the final oral examination in the PhD programme see PhD Thesis and Final exam.

Applicants are strongly advised to consult the Departmental webpages in detail and to consider the areas of specialisation of staff members when preparing the dissertation topic. Consultations in advance of application are also recommended.

Doctoral students must pass entrance interviews and then prepare, in cooperation with a supervisor, individual study plans.

NB: The paid doctoral programme „in English“ (annual tuition fees apply) differs from the unpaid programme taught in Czech“ only in the form of students‘ communication with the university administration, which has to be in Czech. In the programme referred to as „in Czech“, courses are taught and supervision as well as examinations are conducted in English. To apply for the programme „in Czech“, a Czech version of the online application form must be filled in.
