The Department of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures offers a doctoral programme in Anglophone Literatures and Cultures. Applicants may choose one of two modes of study:
- internal (four years with a stipend)
- external (called "combined" in university materials and applications, five to eight years without a stipend).
The main aim of the programme is a substantial doctoral dissertation which must be recommended by the student’s supervisor and two examiners/reviewers and defended in public before an examination board. Applicants are strongly advised to consult the Departmental webpages in detail and to consider the areas of specialisation of staff members when preparing the dissertation topic. Consultations in advance of application are also recommended.
Doctoral students must pass entrance interviews and then prepare, in cooperation with a supervisor, individual study plans.
Mandatory Courses and Examinations:
(a) Doctoral seminar consisting of two one-semester PhD courses (Rhetoric in Literature and Philosophy; Literate Technologies) and two semesters of short paper presentations
(b) Foreign language exam (German, French, Spanish, Latin) organised by the Language Centre at the Faculty. Other languages can be assigned in view of a specific research area
(c) Philosophy - organised by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies
(d) Expanded theses of the PhD dissertation
(e) Specialization exam (an essay assessed by the supervisor)
(f) Research activities including: one article published in peer-reviewed journal, presentation at a conference, application for a grant project, translation of an academic article or book, editing a collection of essays or conference proceedings, a research visit abroad. Out of these at least four activities must be fulfilled.
(g) Regular consultations with the supervisor
Student progress is evaluated at the end of each year by their supervisor.
The PhD programme is concluded by an oral PhD examination which precedes the examination of the doctoral dissertation.
